Military Assistance Program The Veterans of Foreign Wars is again in the forefront of patriotism as the organization and its members find ways to show support for America and her armed forces. As our nation continues to conduct this "war on terrorism", thousands of our active-duty and Reserve service members, along with the National Guard, remain deployed overseas and stateside for what has proven to be a tough battle. Supporting our troops now is more important than ever before. It is our duty as Americans to do our part to their spirits and morale up. VFW's Adopt-A-Unit Program The long period of neglecting our nation's military is over. Now Americans everywhere are recognizing these men and women that serve in our armed forces. It is our goal to have every VFW Post and Ladies Auxiliary sponsoring a military unit or ship. The procedure for adopting a unit is very simple; the Post or Auxiliary completes the adoption application and then either faxes or mail the application to VFW National Headquarters. Many mailing programs that enabled members to send packages and letters to "Any Service Member" have been discontinued due to safety precautions in the US Postal system, through the Adopt-A-Unit Program your post is linked to a specific point of contact (POC) in the unit who can receive packages and mail from your Post  POC. This program does not end when the troops re-deploy home. They and their families continue to need our backing and assistance. Emergency Financial Assistance The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, in conjunction with its Posts, Departments, may provide emergency financial aid to qualified military personnel or their family members for the purpose of avoiding financial hardships resulting from military deployments. Such emergency aid will be made in the form of a "one time grant" to the service member or qualified family member. Subject to the compliance with the conditions and procedures specified by National Headquarters, National Headquarters may, subject to the availability of adequate funds, furnish matching funds up to $500 to match contributions by VFW Department or local Post for emergency aid.
